The Kid on the Ridge

The Kid on the Ridge was born early in 2002 during a whole staff professional development session with Julia Atkin when she posed the questions "What is powerful learning?" and "What is it powerful to learn?" Our staff responded by forming a set of qualities and attributes that we would like each young learner to have when he or she leaves Selwyn Ridge.

Since then, the Kid has evolved further and is now represented graphically and used by staff, students and the community in a multitude of ways as part of our shared vision and culture.

The Heart
Positive, caring, risk-taker, resilient, co-operative, self-improvement, sense of humour, creative, passionate, confident, motivated, independent, interdependent, flexible.

The Mind
Knowing about ourselves, knowing about others, knowing about our world, knowing about the environment, knowing about values and morals.

The Toolbox
Literacy, numeracy, physical skills, information literacy, communication skills, social skills, critical thinking, rational thinking, reflective thinking, problem solving, goal setting, wise choices, organisational skills, work and study skills, learning to learn.
